Getting to appointments

A friendly lift to medical appointments when public transport is difficult

If getting to a medical appointment is difficult, NMVC may be able to help.

Our volunteer drivers can pick you up, take you to your appointment, wait for up to two hours, and bring you back home again. The service is there for people who struggle to use public transport because of age, mobility, disability, health conditions, or limited local transport options.

Where we can take you

We can help with transport to medical appointments including:

  • GP surgeries
  • Dentists
  • Opticians
  • Hospitals
  • Clinics
  • Physiotherapists

We have drivers who can help with local appointments in and around New Mills, as well as some hospital appointments further afield.

Areas we cover

We may be able to support people travelling from:

  • New Mills
  • Birch Vale
  • Furness Vale
  • Chapel
  • Chinley
  • Whaley Bridge
  • Hayfield
  • Buxworth

If you are not sure whether we cover your area, please contact us and we’ll talk it through.

How the service works

Our volunteer drivers use their own cars to help people get to medical appointments.

A driver will pick you up, take you to your appointment, and wait for up to two hours before bringing you home again. Please note that our drivers are volunteers and cannot act as carers. You will need to be able to get in and out of a car without assistance.

Booking transport

Please contact us as early as possible before your appointment. A small charge is made for this service to help cover costs.

We ask for at least two working days’ notice, but because this is a popular service, we may struggle to accommodate requests made less than a week in advance. We cannot guarantee transport for every appointment, but we’ll talk through what support may be available.

Is this service right for me?

This service is for people who cannot reasonably use public transport to get to medical appointments.

We may not be able to provide transport if:

  • You are under 18
  • You need personal care during the journey or appointment
  • You cannot transfer in and out of a car unaided
  • You have needs that require specialist support, unless you are accompanied by an appropriate adult

If you are unsure, please contact Hannah and she’ll talk it through with you.

THANK YOU TO OUR SUPPORTERS

Thank you to the organisations and funders who help make this service possible. Their support helps people across New Mills and the surrounding areas get to vital medical appointments.
